After several weeks of intermittent seeking information, I finally figured out how to apply for a residence permit in Sweden. Though the process should not be that difficult to complete, some details need to be made certain so that one will not have to be back and forth to the Swedish Trade Council.

As an exchange student, one should apply for a residence permit instead of a visa. What's important is that if an exchange student does not stay in Sweden for more than one year, the Swedish government will not offer health insurance. In other words, a sufficient proof of total health insurance in Taiwan is required along with the application for a residence permit. If one happens to see a doctor in Sweden, he should pay by cash on the spot, get the receipt from the doctor and get the money back in Taiwan. Since usually we are part of national health insurance in Taiwan, what we need is go to one of the branches of Bureau of National Health Insurance and apply for an English certificate for free. The Swedish official in Swedish Trade Council also suggests that other English certificates of insurance are better to be presented if one buys some health or medical insurance in private insurance companies.

When handing in the application, the Swedish official from the immigration office will come out and have a little talk with the applicant.

Other documents or papers needed for application are:
1. 2 photos,
2. passport (with a copy),
3. the letter of acceptance (with a copy, so that you can have the original back),
4. application fee 4,500 NT dollars,
5. bank statement (it is required that one should have at least 7, 300 SEK, approximately 1045 USD, per month and if one plans to stay for a year, the bank account should support at least 10 months' living expenses.)
6. two copies of application form (it's better to download the application form from the website since I have not seen it provided in Swedish Trade Council. The download URL: www.migrationsverket.se/blanketter/bob/studier/stud_104031_en.pdf) and
7. proof of health insurance (if one stays for less than a year).
